11. Cemeteries

Reformed cemetery: Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street
Catholic cemetery: Széchenyi Street

Due to the boundary delimitation process of 1851, the Reformed congregation had to give up its cemetery. At the initiative of then-parson János Móricz, it was offered a new plot at the bottom of Soós-hill in exchange.

Ferenc Késmárky, the official designated for executing the measurements, chose the plot himself. A public blessing ceremony was performed on June 18 1854.

During the course of the years, it has become the final resting place of some of the local reformed priests like Gyula Czakó, Gyula Molnár and József Kuti. It is also the place where the famous “poet of Balaton” and one of Kenese’s most renowned representatives, Lajos Soós has been laid to rest along with his friend, the poet Károly Csizmadia. The hill’s name giver has designated his final resting place well before his death and his will has been respected. Nevertheless, only part of his wish came true since at the time, the lake was still clearly visible from the site of his grave and what he wanted most was to lay as close to it as possible.

The cemetery is also the site where the monument honoring the heroic soldiers who have fallen during World War II was erected.

Right next to the main entrance is the memorial of the heroic victims of the community, skillfully crafted by Gizella Péterfy. It was commissioned by the former Urban Preservation Association and put in its current place on June 30 1991. The carved wood column raised in memory of the revolution and freedom fighters of 1948-49, is the artwork of sculptor József Nyulasi.

Right on the opposite side is the German military graveyard, the final resting place of many German soldiers who spent their lives in Kenese.

The farthest part of the graveyard was reserved for the victims of the many deadly epidemics that swept through the area at different times. No new burials have been conducted here in order to avoid a new outbreak of the plague.

Those who feel up for a walk or wish to pay their respects, can also visit the Catholic cemetery (Széchenyi Street). This is where Bishop Gusztáv Jánosi’s crypt lies along with the graves of the reverends Árpád Németh and János Szabó, who was also Kenese’s first monographer (his grave site cannot be visited).
